Confession: the safe paved path

Prayer of Confession – based on Proverbs 3:5, Psalm 105:8, Psalm 118

O God, the writer of Proverbs advises us to trust in you with all our heart, and not to lean on our own understanding. But we have lost the conviction and pioneering spirit of our fathers and mothers before us. We give up and take the safe paved path rather than blaze new trails of faith by trusting in your covenant promises of steadfast love that endures for ever. Give us confidence in you filled with courage and resiliency of heart, mind and will, we pray. Amen.

May sacred times free you for God’s service
May sacred places set you in God’s peace
May sacred objects anchor you for God’s presence
May sacred activities place you in God’s hands
May sacred people you challenge and comfort you in God’s grace.
May the sacred in your life increase
and be filled with the holy God
overflowing into the world,
For we are blessed to be a blessing.  Amen

poem: On This Day

On this day,

we gather.

Wandering into the pews,

wondering what the next hour might bring.

Some of it familiar,

some will be new.

Bringing God alongside with us, we beckon the Spirit.

Remembering saints of the beloved past

our hearts stir, our spirits cry out.

 

Concerns, worries, joys, delights

all sit in these pews with us.

Common friends, old friends, new friends, strangers, enemies.

Mixed together.

Just like last Sunday.

just like next Sunday.

Over and over and over again.

The rhythm of worship.

 

All muddled together.

Yet we are here.

Some broken and bruised.

Others shouting our alleluias.

God is here in this place.

Jesus is challenging us once again.

Are you living the prophets life?

The Spirit is breathing new life.

Do you hear her whispers?

Alleluias.

Once again.

confession: other gods

You, Lord, have been our dwelling place in all generations. You free us, you provide for us, you have even given your self to us. Yet so often we forget that this is your story, and try to take the lead. We confess that we have turned from your way and gone our own ways. We have served other gods. We have loved you with our words but not with our actions. Forgive us, and turn us yet again to your path. Give us courage to follow you, and to proclaim in our lives that we worship and serve only you.

confession: turn us forward

Lord, you are before and behind us, whether we stand in the midst of a crowd or the edge of the wilderness. We look at your path, but sometimes we are afraid and we turn our eyes back instead; we long for what is comfortable and familiar. We hear your voice, but it is so easy to turn toward the many other voices offering a life of fun and prosperity. We pray for your will to be done, but it is easier to just go along as we always have. Forgive us, O God. Turn us forward, and set our feet on your path.
