Anytime

confession: we’d rather keep the door closed

One:    You, Lord, are Alpha and Omega—beginning and end.
But in between sometimes it feels like we are on our own,
and then the illusion of control is so seductive.

All:     Forgive us when we try to control you, insisting that your will must match ours.
For we confess that we do not like the unknown,
so we fill that void with shoulds and musts we expect both you and others to obey.
We’d rather keep the door closed with certainty than risk opening to changed life.
We’d rather be bound up in our own beliefs than risk being set free by love, for love.

One:    Open wide the door of life, O God,
All:     and give us courage to walk through.

CTW: come in and go out

One:    God invites us to come in and go out and find pasture:

All:     to come into the kingdom, into abundant life, into the light;

to go out to serve, out to live our faith, out to be the Body of Christ.

One:    Christ calls us to hear his voice

All:     and so we come to listen and seek and follow.

One:    We stand at the threshold of God’s future,

All:     the Spirit stands at the door and knocks.

One:    Come, let us worship.

invocation: pleasing

Blessed are you, Lord our God, King of the universe.
We praise you for the goodness of your creation,
the power of your love,
and the signs of your presence among us.
We gather here to worship you,
and we call on you to come and speak among us.
May what we do here be as pleasing to you as it is pleasing for us
to be here together in your name.  Amen.

Leader:  We come to praise God’s holy name.
People:   We come to offer our hearts to Christ.
Leader:  We come, male and female, young and old,
People:  We come, rich and poor, messy and tidy,
Leader:  We come, cranky and cheerful, burdened and free,
People:  All are welcome here.  We come just as we are.
Leader:  We come to praise God’s holy name!
People: All honor and glory to God forever and ever!

One:    You are the Source of all Life, O God, offering yourself to us beyond our imagination.

All:     Yet so often what comes streaming out of our own hearts is not grace, but gossip; not compassion, but comparison; not peace, but passive-aggression; not hope, but hurt.

~silence~

One:    You are the Source of all Life, O God.

All:      Forgive us for turning to other sources, gorging ourselves with that which does not satisfy. Fill us once again with faith, hope, and love, and connect us to you so that we may be springs of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, generosity, and self-control. We ask in the name of Jesus the Christ, who quenches thirst with living water. Amen.
