Ordinary Time

confession: under cover of darkness

Your light shines in the darkness, O God, and we confess that sometimes we prefer to hide under cover of darkness, where we are free to participate in injustice, to hurt others and ourselves, to do whatever it takes to get ahead, to operate only in our comfort zone without challenge. We forget that your light of true freedom will shine, calling us to a more excellent way. We forget that the promise of a child is a promise for the future—that there is more beyond us, beyond our desires, beyond our brokenness, beyond our understanding. Forgive our short-sightedness. Forgive our hardened hearts. Forgive our complicity in systems that hurt and abuse your earth, your people, your church, your world. Shine your light again this day, that we may see and follow your path.

prayer of dedication: here and now

We are sometimes a fearful people, Holy One.
But today, we place our trust, our hope and our faith in you.
Use these gifts – and all our lives – for the creation of your Reign on earth,
not in some distant future but here and now.
We give thanks.
Amen.

call to worship: praise you everyday

We will exalt you, O God, and praise your name forever!
We praise you everyday – yes, we will praise you forever!

Great is the Holy One! God is most worthy of praise!
No one can measure the greatness of God!

Adonai is close to all who call out in truth.
God is filled with kindness, and helps those who call out for God’s mercy.

We who are gathered praise our Sovereign God!
May everyone on earth bless God’s name forever! Amen!

One:    God calls us to worship, lifting our voices and our hearts in praise.

All:     God calls us to worship, lifting our hands and our resources to serve.

One:    God calls us to worship, when we are together and when we are alone.

All:     God calls us to worship, in the sanctuary and on the street corner.

One:    God calls us to worship, with our everyday choices and our Sunday best.

All:     God calls us to worship, in song and prayer and in doing justice and loving kindness.

One:    God calls us to worship.

confession: do not match

God, you are creating a world where everyone can live an abundant life. We confess that we often work against your creative spirit, instead creating systems that privilege a few and leave behind the rest. We confess that we benefit from injustice, and we often do not want to give up our spot at the top. We confess that sometimes the words we say and sing in the sanctuary do not match our actions in other parts of the building, let alone other spaces in our lives. We confess that we prefer to offer you what is easy and hope that is good enough to get us through the week. Forgive our inconsistent faith, our hypocrisy, our hard-heartedness. Open us to your way, and give us courage to walk your path of healing, reconciliation, justice, and peace.
