Sunday’s Coming: working toward March 18

Oh boy, the snake week! 🙂

I confess that this Sunday we will have a cantata (John Rutter’s Requiem) so I won’t be preaching on snakes this year, nor on obscure references to said snakes in the midst of a much-beloved, almost-cliche story. Will you?

Perhaps this week you’ll be considering the many ways in which it is both true and difficult to believe that God is good, all the time. 

Or maybe you’ll seize the opportunity to explore how we are justified by grace through faith, and we participate in good works prepared for us ahead of time–as a way of life.

Or maybe you’re in the midst of a Lenten series…

whatever you’re working on this week, stop in for a chat! Share your seeds, sparks, and ideas well-formed or still very vague. One word, one phrase, an image, a feeling, an atmosphere…and let’s join in creating together! When we bounce our ideas around who knows what might happen?

it’s almost officially mid-Lent. How’s that Lenten Discipline going?

How was worship yesterday? What worked, what didn’t work, and what do you hope to have happen this coming week? What atmosphere are you working to create? What theme or image are you contemplating?

Perhaps you’re following the covenant theme through the Old Testament reading–this week is the high point, with the Ten Commandments.

Perhaps you’re playing with the image of the heavens that sing and shout of God’s glory.

Perhaps you’re wondering about the inverse relationship between our foolishness and God’s power.

Or maybe you’re pondering the Temple Tantrum.

Whatever your direction, we hope you’ll share the seeds of ideas here! Even if all you have is a word or phrase, an image or vague idea, stop by in the comments and share! You never know when you might just spark someone else’s creativity (or have your own sparked!) and lead to all kinds of new creative worship ideas or new liturgy!

One Sunday into Lent, how are things going? How was worship yesterday? Was the atmosphere what you hoped? Did the liturgy work well with the music and the proclamation?

What are you thinking for this week? We have the name-changing covenant to work with this week, and of course the different kind of name-changing conversation between Jesus and Peter. Paul reminds us to have faith in the promise (after all, Abraham was “as good as dead” and he believed…). The psalm reminds us to praise the God who keeps his promise (to borrow a phrase from a John Bell hymn titled “God it Was”)–the promise will endure so long that those yet unborn will also hear it.

What word or phrase will is catching your imagination this week? What image or word is to be the seed of your liturgical expression? Put those ideas–even if they’re just a word, just three words, or a whole prayer!–in the comments so we can create together!

Sunday’s Coming: working toward February 26

Lent is upon us. This week we’ll enter the journey, some of us, on Ash Wednesday. We’ll come face to face with mortality and sin, then turn our faces and our lives back toward God, seeking a new relationship with God, God’s people, and God’s world. Throughout Lent we continue seeking both the truth of our own lives and the Truth of God’s desire for us…and this Sunday is the first time we get to explore that fully.

So maybe you’ll be working with God’s rainbow covenant. Maybe, along with the psalmist, you’ll be pleading “Teach me your ways.” Maybe you’ll be contemplating Paul’s call to Be prepared to suffer for doing good, and connecting baptism and the Flood… or maybe you’ll enter the season with the traditional story of Jesus’ baptism, and you’ll follow him out into the wilderness.

Do you have a theme for the whole season, or will you work week by week? Are you planning to follow one set of readings (all old testament, all psalms, all gospel, etc) throughout the five Sundays, or are you mixing it up? Are you following the lectionary or working on a series off-lectionary? Share your ideas in the comments!

Perhaps you have just one word or one phrase so far…if you put that in the comments, you can inspire others and we can begin bouncing ideas around. Who knows, we may even end up with a brand new piece of liturgy we can share!

Sunday’s Coming: working toward T-Fig!

Transfiguration Sunday is finally here. We had some interesting discussion in the brainstorming post, but now it’s time to do the real work. What are you thinking about for T-Fig (or, as one of my friends calls it, “t-figgety”)?

Perhaps you’re going with Mark’s sparse storytelling on the traditional Peter-James-and-John-were-with-Jesus-in-that-place. (You’re welcome for the earworm, by the way,)

Perhaps you’re taking a day to talk about the passing on of the mantle from Elijah to Elisha.

Maybe you’re going for the short-but-sweet shiny-but-veiled gospel.

There’s also some powerful poetry exhorting us to remember God in the psalm.
