Ash Wednesday litany

One: Holy God, you are the One who creates,
who redeems, who sustains.
All: We give you thanks for all that you are
and all that you do.
One: You are love,
and those who abide in love abide in your presence.
All: Your love and justice are extravagant,
your grace amazing,
your peace beyond understanding.

One: We forget that we are created in your image
We act as if we are undeserving of your love
All: Your steadfast love endures forever.
One: We limit your love
by choosing who we think is worthy;
by refusing to share;
by choosing judgment rather than love.
All: Your steadfast love endures forever.
One: We define what love is and looks like
You love us unconditionally…forgive our conditions.
All: Your steadfast love endures forever.

One: You call us to a new way of life,
to come and see and hear and know and be transformed.
All: I don’t always want to be renewed—change is hard.
I am comfortable the way things are.
It’s easier to follow my way than to seek your way.
One: You call us to a new way of life,
a way of grace, peace, love, and justice.
All: I turn my eyes away from people in need.
I turn my heart away from people
with whom I disagree.
I turn my mind away
from ideas that make me uncomfortable.

for your kingdom to come on earth.
All: We turn our eyes from a dying creation,
ignoring your call to care.
We turn our hearts toward instant gratification
at the expense of the people
and the planet you have created.

We turn our ears toward the loudest voices
rather than your voice in the silence and the silenced.
We turn inward to save our institutions
instead of heeding your call to go out.

The bulletin is probably printed, but there’s always more, isn’t there? There are children’s sermons, calls to confession, prayers of dedication, blessings, prayers for illumination…what images or words or phrases are you working with in the Other Parts this week? What theme are you hoping to carry through even when it’s not printed in the bulletin?

This week our call to confession and declaration of forgiveness are mountain-toppy. What do you have to share?

So often we think we understand, we think we know what God should be doing. But when we let our guard down and speak the truth about our confusion, God’s grace enters in. So we take this time to be honest about our limitations and our failures. Let us pray.

(prayer of confession)

On the mountaintop, Christ shows us who he truly is, and it is dazzling. On the mountaintop, Christ shows us who we truly are—children of God whose lives are made new by God’s grace and by the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Friends, believe and live this good news—in Jesus Christ, we can shine light for the world. Thanks be to God. Amen.

One: Be still,
for the presence of the Lord,
the Holy One, is here.
All: We come before God
with praise and thanksgiving,
we stand on holy ground.
One: Be still,
for the presence of the Lord
is shining all around.
All: Holy fire, splendor, radiance
are here, lighting our way
and setting us on fire with love
as we stand on holy ground.
One: Be still,
for the power of the Lord
is moving in this place.
All: God comes to cleanse and heal,
to fill us with grace overflowing,
as we stand on holy ground.

One: Be still,
for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One, is here.
All: We come together and find that this is holy ground.
One: Be still,
for the glory of the Lord is shining all around.
All: We stand on this holy ground,
renewed by awe.
One: Be still,
for the power of the Lord is moving in this place.

waiting, listening, watching, hoping.
One: Be still and know that God is here.
Come, let us worship.

A prayer for Transfiguration Sunday.

One: You always seem to speak on mountains—
All: make this place a mountaintop today.
One: On mountains your glory shines—
All: make this place a mountaintop today.
One: On mountains we can hear your word—
All: make this place a mountaintop today.
One: On mountains you show yourself to your people—
All: make this place a mountaintop today.
One: On mountains your presence is easy to see—
All: make this place, and every place, a mountaintop
and make us the mirrors of your glory,
the speakers of your word,
the bearers of your presence.
Amen.
